Filmed in a disused bingo hall in the heart of Hereford late last year, The Picture of Dorian Gray transformed the space with a specially built set, bringing Wilde’s haunting tale of vanity, beauty, and moral corruption vividly to life.
The episode aired on Sunday on BBC Four as the latest instalment of The Read, produced by Hereford-based production company, Rural Studios.
Starring Luke Thompson — widely recognised for his role in the global Netflix hit Bridgerton — the production arrives at a moment when the actor is enjoying a surge in popularity.
“We’re thrilled to continue Rural Studios’ mission of creating broadcast-standard content right here in Hereford and across the Midlands,” said Julie Colman, head of production.
“Transforming a disused bingo hall into the world of The Picture of Dorian Gray shows the creativity, skill, and ambition of our team. Bringing stories like this to BBC Four demonstrates that high-quality, nationally recognised productions can thrive in our region, showcasing the talent we have to audiences across the UK.”
Thompson delivers a captivating performance, bringing the viewer into the world of Dorian Gray, a young man whose outward beauty remains untouched by time, while a hidden portrait bears the consequences of his actions.
“I’ve always been curious about why stories stick around. I’d heard about this book, and 140 years later, it’s still provocative and unsettling, and still thrills people. And if the page seems unappealing, having someone speak it to you can help bring the story to life. It takes us back to being a kid somehow, I think,” said actor Luke Thompson
This instalment of The Read , produced by Rural Studios, continues the series’ mission to bring classic literature vividly to life, pairing a standout lead performance with authentic locations and sets that enhance the story’s timeless themes.
The episode is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
