A slew of incredibly memorable duos have taken to the stage during the MTV Video Music Awards’ four-decade history.
There was Madonna making out with Britney Spears and then Christina Aguilera at the 2003 show, a Hennessy-toting Kanye West and the microphone he swiped from Taylor Swift during her 2009 acceptance speech, Beyoncé and the baby bump she revealed roughly five months ahead of daughter Blue Ivy‘s 2012 arrival, plus Spears and Banana, the albino Burmese python she carried during her iconic 2001 performance.
“In my head I was saying, Just perform, just use your legs and perform,” the pop star recounted in her 2003 memoir The Woman In Me. “But what nobody knows is that as I was singing, the snake brought its head right around to my face, right up to me, and started hissing.”
In that moment, she continued, “I was thinking, Are you f—ing serious right now? The f—ing goddamn snake’s tongue is flicking out at me. Right. Now. Finally, I got to the part where I handed it back, thank God.”

And yet she and the serpent might not be the most incompatible pair to attend the iconic awards show. Everyone from Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber (she actually interviewed her then-boyfriend at the 2011 outing) to Spears and then-love Justin Timberlake to Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey have posed for photographres at the annual event.
But the trophy for the least successful pair might just go to Christina Applegate and Brad Pitt.

As for the star who trumped Pitt’s perfectly coiffed ’80s hair, Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach later confirmed on radio show Elliot in the Morning “that dude would be me. So there was a time on this earth when Sebastian Bach was, like, a hotter lay than Brad Pitt.”
And there was also a moment in time where Sarah Jessica Parker attended with then-steady boyfriend Robert Downey Jr. a year after Cher snuggled up with Richie Sambora. Before the stars take to the VMAs carpet Sept. 7, enjoy this trip down memory lane.
