Bruce Springsteen managed to sidestep an uncomfortable encounter with his bitter rival President Donald Trump as both attended the US Open final.

The tennis championship attracted a star-studded audience to witness Carlos Alcaraz triumph over Jannik Sinner in a four-set thriller at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

The victory marked the 22-year-old’s sixth Grand Slam championship.

Despite the spectacular tennis action unfolding on court, considerable focus shifted to the spectator areas as the president was spotted in a luxury box sponsored by premium timepiece manufacturer Rolex.

Bruce was also observed among the crowd, enjoying the match from the stands where he occupied a seat in the celebrity VIP section alongside other notable figures including musician Sting and Hollywood actor Ben Stiller.

He said, “It’s an American tragedy. I think that it was the combination of the deindustrialisation of the country and then the incredible increase in wealth disparity that left so many people behind. It was ripe for a demagogue,” he continued.

“And while I can’t believe it was this moron that came along, he fit the bill for some people,” Springsteen said, “But what we’ve been living through in the last 70 days is things that we all said, ‘This can’t happen here.’ ‘This will never happen in America.’ And here we are.”

Springsteen didn’t mince words when it came to Trump’s controversial immigration policies either, which sparked mayhem in Los Angeles and prompted Trump to deploy countless National Guard troops to combat the “address the lawlessness” amid the ICE turmoil.

Looking back on his West Coast experiences, he noted, “When I went to California, obviously there was a large migrant culture. I was interested in the history of it, because I felt that this is the future of the United States – which it has become.”

Springsteen voiced his disgust, describing what’s happening across America as “disgusting” and a “terrible tragedy.”

He observed, “There are communities all across America now that have taken in immigrants and migrant workers.

“So what’s going on at the moment to me is disgusting, and a terrible tragedy,” he said. “We have a long democratic history. We don’t have an autocratic history as a nation. It’s fundamentally democratic, and I believe that at some point that’s going to rear its head and things will swing back. Let’s knock on wood.”
