We don’t want to be Grinches, but Bruce Springsteen and Pati Scialfa are not hosting this year’s “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” special on NBC this year.
It’s another AI generated fake news story on Facebook.
The posts state that “under the shine of more than 50,000 golden lights, the pair will deliver a duet nearly three decades in the making — a rare holiday performance infused with devotion, soul, and the unmistakable musical chemistry that has defined their journey together.”
An AI generated image of Springsteen and Scialfa standing in front of the Rockefeller Center tree accompanies the text with a link to a story on the faux show. We suggest you do not click on it.
“On my calendar…looking forward to it ! Bruce and Patti ! … oh yes that is very special (heart emoji),” commented one fan on Facebook.
Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa take the stage with the E Street Band to perform the final concert at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Friday, October 9, 2009.
“I can imagine bruce playing, never hosting,” commented another.
Reba McEntire will host the real “Christmas in Rockefeller Center,” which airs 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 on NBC and Peacock. Marc Anthony, Halle Bailey, Michael Bublé, Kristin Chenoweth, Laufey, New Edition, Brad Paisley, Carly Pearce, Gwen Stefani, and the Radio City Rockettes are the guests.
The Rockettes are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. The broadcast includes the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.
AI generated misinformation online is surging, according to a 2024 report from Google and other researchers.
“Image manipulations in the annotated claims were generally simple and do not require technological sophistication to produce,” reads the report. “The most common type are context manipulations, which use (frequently unmodified) images alongside a false claim about what they depict.”
The concept Springsteen and Scialfa hosting “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” is not so far fetched. Springsteen and the E Street Band’s version of “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” is a seasonal standard and the Boss formerly hosted annual holiday shows at Convention Hall in Asbury Park in the early 2000s.
Bruce Springsteen sings “Blue Christmas” with his wife, Patti Scialfa, at a benefit concert in Asbury Park, New Jersey on December 17, 2000. The concert benefited local charities such as the Greater Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce and the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County.
Fellow musicians like Southside Johnny and Bobby Bandiera along with Springsteen family and audience members would wind up on stage at some point. A modest admission price would benefit local charities.
The stages in Convention Hall were adorned with Christmas trees for the shows but nothing like the one at Rockefeller Center during the holidays.
