Bruce Willis’ young daughters are “grieving” their father as he battles dementia, according to their mother.
The Hollywood icon was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2023, and his health has been on a downward trajectory since then.
However, the devoted father of five is not alone. His wife Emma Heming Willis and ex-wife Demi Moore have stood by his side throughout this ordeal.
Emma recently described the diagnosis as “a traumatic experience”, expressing frustration over the lack of information provided to the family.
Upon leaving the appointment where Bruce received his diagnosis, Emma said they felt a lack of “hope, direction, support.”
Emma previously revealed she told her daughters about their father’s condition soon after his diagnosis, reports the Mirror US.
“Pretty quickly, I told them. I have always been very open with the girls. I never wanted them to think that [Bruce] wasn’t paying attention to them,” she explained on Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey with Diane Sawyer.
“What I learned is that when you give them the information, you wait to hear what the questions might be, and they really didn’t have questions about it. I think there was a sense of relief for all of us that, like, ‘Okay, now we get it and now we understand.'”
Bruce also has three daughters – Rumer, Tallulah and Scout LaRue – with his ex-wife, Demi.
Despite experiencing moments with “no hope” at times, Bruce’s family keeps supporting each other and focuses on the positive aspects, which is precisely what Emma demonstrated last month when she posted on Instagram to share a comprehensive explanation of anosognosia, which she describes as “a neurological condition where a person lacks awareness or insight into their own illness.”
The description went on, “They may not recognize their symptoms, downplay how serious they are, or explain them away as something else.”
Emma noted, “A reminder: this isn’t denial, it’s part of the disease.”
Alongside this image, she confessed, “This is one term I wish I had brought up more during the media tour for The Unexpected Journey. It doesn’t roll off the tongue easily and when you’re already nervous, forget about it. But I want to highlight it here.”
Emma revealed that anosognosia represents “another complicated layer of navigating FTD.”
Throughout the actor’s struggle, she felt thankful the condition was present in his situation. “For Bruce, it meant he didn’t tap into his disease, which was a blessing, sparing him the awareness of that weight,” she clarified, before revealing it had an opposite impact on her.
“For me, it was the curse of having to navigate it while carrying the weight of what he could not see,” she continued. “This is the reality for many families facing FTD, and it deserves to be better understood. Someone messaged me and said: ‘I never knew this condition! I wish our neurologist had told me.’ The truth is, I didn’t learn this in the doctor’s office either. I learned it because I went digging for answers.”
