Bruce Willis’s wife, Emma Heming Willis, has responded to the criticism she’s faced since sharing her experiences as the actor’s caregiver.

Emma uploaded a video on Instagram on Friday addressing the ‘loud’ opinions following her recent interview with Diane Sawyer. In this interview, she disclosed that the Die Hard star now resides in a separate home from their family due to their frontotemporal dementia diagnosis, which necessitates round-the-clock care.

“Too often, caregivers are judged quickly and unfairly by those who haven’t lived this journey or stood on the front lines of it,” she penned in the caption. “Sharing openly may invite opinions, but more importantly, it creates connection and validation for those actually navigating the realities of caregiving every day.”

Bruce and Emma, married since 2009, have two children together, Mabel Ray, 13, and Evelyn Penn, 11. The film icon was initially diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, but was later diagnosed with FTP, a group of brain disorders leading to loss of motor skills.

“Bruce is still very mobile,” she stated during the ABC News special Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey. “Bruce is in really great health, overall. It’s just his brain that is failing him. The language is going, and you know, we’ve learned to adapt. We have a way of communicating with him, which is just a different, a different way,” reports the Mirror US.

The 47-year-old also disclosed that her husband was relocated to a nearby home “some time ago” that provides a secure environment for him and his caregiving team, which sparked controversy online. “We’re there a lot,” she explained, mentioning that they share breakfast and dinner there daily.

“It’s our second home, so the girls have their belongings there.”

In the Instagram video she shared to address the backlash, she began by stating, “What I knew is that by sharing some of our intimate information that we would see these two camps. It would be people with an opinion versus people with an actual experience.”

She acknowledged she anticipated that “people with an opinion” would rush to pass judgment. “That is what caregivers are up against,” she continued. “Judgment from others and criticism from others.”

She also referenced her forthcoming book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path. “Nothing changes an opinion quite as powerfully as when you have an experience. Even if someone is closely familiar with dementia or the condition you are caring for, they aren’t in your home, so they don’t know how your person is behaving or your family dynamics.”

Emma wrapped up by saying, “The truth is that the opinions are so loud and they’re so noisy. But if they don’t have the experience of this, they don’t get a say, and they definitely don’t get a vote.”

The Unexpected Journey is scheduled to arrive in bookstores on September 9.
