BTS is bringing a taste of Korea to the cookie aisle with a new limited-edition OREO collaboration that turns one of the group’s favorite childhood snacks into a global release.
On Tuesday (May 26), the iconic sandwich cookie and the global superstars announced they are teaming up to launch limited-edition cookies inspired by hotteok, the popular Korean brown sugar-filled pancake.
The group’s first global collaboration with the snack brand will roll out across more than 80 markets beginning on June 8. The limited-edition release features a brown sugar pancake-flavored creme paired with OREO’s first-ever purple wafers as a tribute to BTS fans.
The group said the collaboration grew out of both nostalgia and their desire to share Korean flavors with fans around the world.
“For OREO to be the first snacking brand we’ve collaborated with globally is a huge honor. We ate them as kids, we eat them in the studio, and now OREO is helping us share a taste of home with the world,” BTS said in a press release. “We’re just so proud to add our own chapter to OREO’s amazing story.”
The cookies will feature 13 different embossments created by BTS to celebrate the group’s 13th anniversary. Designs include member names, a BTS light stick, and a hidden message spread across three cookies for fans to collect and decode.
Several members spoke about the collaboration and the flavor development process via press release.
SUGA said, “We’ve been talking and working with OREO for a really long time, so I think the response is going to be really good.”
J-Hope added, “OREO is such a famous, sweet, and delicious cookie, you know. So honestly, I feel extremely, extremely honored. OREO is opening the BTS door with us.”
RM reflected on the group’s longtime connection to the snack, saying, “We ate quite a lot [of OREOs] during this song camp. When we were working in the studio, there would be OREOs next to us.”
Jin explained how the group helped shape the flavor, saying, “In Korea, there’s a national snack called hotteok, and we took inspiration from it and explained to OREO what that flavor tastes like. We wanted to share with everyone the kinds of dessert flavors Koreans enjoy. It really tastes a lot like hotteok.”
V reflected on reconnecting with fans after time apart, saying, “I had been missing and longing for the moment of meeting fans again for such a long time. So when I finally faced that moment again, all those emotions just came flooding in.”
Jimin added, “I think what we’re all really looking forward to is just being able to be with our fans together like this, all of us.”
“It’s kind of like dalgona [a Korean candy made from caramelized sugar] too,” said Jung Kook of the cookie’s flavor.
“It has to taste good … I mean, I hope they like it! Will they think it’s tasty?” he added, when asked about the fan reaction BTS is most excited for.
The campaign will also invite fans to submit digital “love letters” to BTS through QR codes on the packaging and the collaboration website.
Presales for the Limited Edition OREO & BTS Cookies begin Monday, June 1 at Oreo.com/UnwrapTheCollab before the cookies hit retailers on June 8 for a limited time, while supplies last.
