Burlington’s Highlight event kicks off the new year

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A day of festivities is in store in Burlington on Wednesday to ring in a new year.

It all culminates with a late-night party on the waterfront for Burlington City Arts’ Highlight festivities.

The annual celebration offers all kinds of attractions across the Queen City.

During the day, there’s Circus Smirkus at Contois Auditorium, comedy shows at the Vermont Comedy Club, s’mores at the waterfront and a Moth story hour at the Unitarian Church.

As nighttime creeps in, music and performances kick off at the waterfront and beyond, with the Echo Leahy Center opening its doors for a peaceful break from the hubbub.

Burlington City Arts’ Zach Williamson says back-to-back waterfront fun and fireworks are always a big hit. “That sequence is always awesome. It’s also our highest attendance moment, probably. This year, we have Bob Wagner playing into the fireworks, and we have the Barr brothers from Montreal playing out of the Champ burn to 10 o’clock, so I think it’s going to be a pretty special time,” he said.

The fun wraps up at 12:30 a.m.

You need a Highlight button to access all the events. They cost $20. Kids 5 and under are free. You can buy buttons online or at a box office.

Revelers are in for a chillier Highlight this year, but event coordinators say they still hope to see between 4,000 and 6,000 people on Wednesday.

And a heads-up for people who live in the Burlington area, the fireworks are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on the waterfront.
