About Canta, Violino!
Canta, Violino! is an instrumental duo blending Brazilian choro and samba—two of the most dynamic and influential genres in Brazilian music. The project unites award-winning jazz violinist Andrew Finn Magill, whose work has been featured on NPR, PBS, and TEDx, with seven-string guitar master Edinho Gerber, a seasoned performer raised between the U.S. and Brazil. Together, they craft a sound that is as virtuosic as it is infectious, bridging cultures and traditions with dazzling musicianship.
Magill, a Fulbright fellow and international touring artist, has released multiple albums on Ropeadope Records and earned praise from legendary Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira (Miles Davis, Chick Corea): “He can fool you into thinking he is from Brazil!” Gerber, meanwhile, has carved out a career straddling the worlds of Brazilian choro, samba, jazz, and blues, performing worldwide with ensembles such as Duo Violão and collaborating with artists like Ben Lamar Gay.
About Tyler Sjöström
Tyler Sjöström (pronounced show-strum) is a powerhouse singer-songwriter whose “bone-rattling” voice has captivated audiences across the U.S. and Europe. Emerging from the Chicago music scene, he has performed at SXSW, Lollapalooza, Smiling Acres Fest, and C2C Berlin, and shared stages with the likes of Tenille Townes, Judah & the Lion, Joseph, The Secret Sisters, and The Mighty Oaks. His music has also been featured on television, including commercials for Aflac and the Euro 2024 Futbol Championship.
Now based in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, he continues to tour and record, drawing listeners in with songs full of grit, heart, and honesty. His ability to connect deeply with audiences has made him one of the most compelling rising voices in Americana and folk today.
Monday, Sept. 29
Shadowlands, the collaborative project of S. Carey, longtime Bon Iver member, and John Raymond, a Grammy-nominated jazz trumpeter, will perform.
Shadowlands (Ca d’zan House Concerts)
About Shadowlands
For nearly two decades, S. Carey and John Raymond have followed parallel yet distinct musical journeys. Carey became the right-hand man to Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), collaborated with artists such as Sufjan Stevens and Bruce Hornsby, and released critically acclaimed solo albums praised by Pitchfork and NPR. Raymond carved out a career as an internationally recognized jazz trumpeter, releasing eight albums (including four Grammy-nominated projects) and earning acclaim from “Downbeat Magazine” for “steering jazz in the right direction.”
Shadowlands is the convergence of these worlds: a lush and atmospheric blend of indie folk, forward-thinking jazz, cinematic pop, and subtle electronic textures. Recorded in the woods of Eau Claire, Wisconsin—where Carey and Raymond first met as students—their self-titled release showcases breathy vocals, lyrical horn lines, and an interplay that is both intimate and expansive.
“The music of Shadowlands really feels like home,” says John Raymond. “It has this ethereal quality where you can let your guard down and be fully present. That’s what we hope people experience when they hear us live.”
Carey adds, “When John and I first started working on this project, it was an experiment. But the music grew into something far more meaningful. Playing these songs in a space like Cà d’Zan is exactly the kind of intimate, shared moment that Shadowlands was created for.”
Tuesday, Sept. 30
Zar Electrik, a Franco-Moroccan trio blending Gnawan trance, sub-Saharan rhythms, and mesmerizing electro, will perform.
Zar Electrik (Ca d’zan House Concerts)
About Zar Electrik
Based in Marseille, Zar Electrik has carved out a distinct place in the Mediterranean and global music scenes by weaving together traditional African instruments and modern electronic soundscapes. Their name references a healing ritual from the Horn of Africa, and their music echoes that spirit—immersive, transcendent, and deeply communal.
Fronted by singer-instrumentalists Anass Zine (voice, oud, gumbri, guitar, carcabas, percussion) and Arthur Péneau (voice, electric kora, percussion), alongside producer and electronic alchemist Didier Miosine (sound machines, synthesizers), the trio channels the trance-inducing power of Gnawa traditions while infusing it with hypnotic electronic loops and modern textures.
NPR Music describes the group as creating “a sub-Saharan rave sung in Arabic, French, and Darija,” where centuries-old traditions collide with cutting-edge innovation. The result is a sound both grounded in cultural roots and boundless in its global appeal.
Their concerts are celebrations — rich, swirling journeys that call audiences to dance, meditate, and lose themselves in the fusion of Maghreb, sub-Saharan Africa, and Western electronic influences. The interplay of Zine’s captivating Maghrebian vocals, Péneau’s electrified kora, and Miosine’s pulsing electronic production creates a “dizzying, bubbling and swirling mass of infinite trance-like vibes” that is unlike anything else on today’s world music stages.
