The haunting theatrical experience “Dark Tales Told on a Cold Autumn Eve” is returning to Cape Cod stages this October.
The play, created by playwright Jim Dalglish and co-directed with Jennifer Kangas, brings Cape Cod’s supernatural lore to life through a series of chilling, original tales, according to a community announcement.
First produced in 2018 at Cotuit Center for the Arts, “Dark Tales” is back by popular demand, reimagined and expanded.
The story revolves around Sam, a ghostly tavern-keeper who rekindles his hearth deep in the woods of Great Island in Wellfleet every fall. One by one, the forgotten souls of Cape Cod return to share their tales of betrayal, longing, revenge and redemption. Pirates, witches, mooncussers, selkies, Pilgrims and politicos emerge from the shadows, each with a story to tell.

Inspired by Poe, Hoffmann, Saki and Irish ghost story podcasts, Dalglish blends original storytelling with Cape Cod legends to create an immersive theatrical event. Audiences will be transported to chilling and iconic local settings, including P’town Harbor, Three Sisters Lights, Horseleech Pond, White Cedar Swamp, the Nauset Moors and even a famous compound in Hyannis Port.
The play will be performed at four locations across Cape Cod:
Academy of Performing Arts, 120 Main St., Orleans: Oct. 3, 4, 10 and 11 at 7 p.m.
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, 2357 State Highway Route 6, Wellfleet: Oct. 16-19 at 7 p.m. (Sunday at 4 p.m.)
Cotuit Center for the Arts, 4404 Falmouth Road, Cotuit: Oct. 23-26 at 7 p.m. (Sunday at 1:30 p.m.)
The Provincetown Inn, 1 Commercial St., Provincetown: Oct. 29 and 30 at 7 p.m.
The cast includes Ian Ryan as Sam Smith, Geof Newton as The Fisherman, Bonnie Fairbanks as Maria, Samantha McMahon and Denise Page as May, Jacob Rabold as Tony, Brandon Prentiss as Elliot, Matt Whelan as Dale, Dahlia Viprino as Lorelie and Sara Shatzel Fitzpatrick as Madame X.
The play is produced in partnership with the Academy of Performing Arts, Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, Cotuit Center for the Arts and The Provincetown Inn.
Helltown Players, a collaborative of dramatists and theatre enthusiasts from the Outer Cape, is producing the play. The group’s mission is to produce new plays written by Cape Cod playwrights. Visit the website and find out more about Helltown Players at https://www.helltownplayers.org.
