The royals are in “Keep calm and carry on” mode in the aftermath of the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor last week. As the King said in his statement, “My family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”
On Sunday, Kate and William, who is president of the BAFTAS, attended the glamorous entertainment event in London. It must have been a welcome break given the dark news of the past week. It’s the first time Kate has attended since 2023 and the first for William since 2024.
The couple wore shades of red and pink, with the prince snagging my best-dressed royal award. He looked great in one of his favoured velvet tuxedos — this time in a dark garnet or burgundy shade — while his wife chose a pink dual-toned chiffon gown from Gucci that she’s had since 2019. She accented her outfit with spectacular royal jewellery, including an Art Deco diamond bracelet that once belonged to Queen Mary and the Greville chandelier earrings that are made of every modern cut of diamond.
Even at the BAFTAs, they couldn’t get away from his uncle’s scandal. As they walked the red carpet, a member of the media called out, “Your royal highnesses, is the monarchy in peril?” (See the below Vanity Fair video for the moment.)
They ignored the question, following in the decision taken by King Charles III, who stated on February 19, “As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter.”
It was the princess’s second engagement of the weekend. On Saturday, Kate attended a rugby match in her role as president of the English Rugby Football Union. Alas, Ireland thumped England 42-21.
In the aftermath of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest on February 19, I did a series of video interviews for Canadian and international media outlets.
As well, I wrote an opinion piece for the Toronto Star: “Former prince Andrew’s mother coddled him. King Charles is finally giving him the cold shoulder he deserves.” (Note: the print title is in the above screengrab.)
I also wrote a completely separate piece for this Substack: “Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and the sword of Damocles.”
