CBS Entertainment Chief Addresses ‘Watson’ & ‘DMV’ Cancellations: “We Had To Make Tough Decisions”

CBS addressed the cancellations of its freshman comedy series DMV and its sophomore drama Watson on Wednesday.

“In terms of DMV and Watson, we love both those shows. They were a joy to work on. Morris Chestnut is maybe one of the greatest No. 1’s I’ve ever dealt with. But, you know, it’s a high bar on CBS. We aggregate all the numbers, and we have to make those tough decisions in order to make room for new shows,” shared Amy Reisenbach at a press event this morning where the Fall 2026-27 schedule was revealed.

Created by Craig Sweeny, Watson is a modern version of one of history’s greatest detectives as he turns his attention from solving crimes to solving medical mysteries. While Dr. John Watson’s (Chestnut) team of “doc-tectives” may have defeated Moriarty (Randall Park) last season, they remain determined in Season 2 in their mission to investigate and treat the world’s rarest diseases for their clinic’s patients. With his eyes fixed on the future, Watson faces an unexpected twist when Sherlock Holmes, who was presumed dead, resurfaces, forcing him to confront a buried secret from his past — one that lies hidden within his own body.

Watson also stars Eve Harlow, Peter Mark Kendall, Ritchie Coster, Inga Schlingmann and Rochelle Aytes.

When the show was canceled, Chestnut said, “As many of you know, Watson will not be returning for a third season. After two incredible seasons, I’m so grateful for the experience. It wouldn’t have been the same without the amazing cast and crew. Thank you for making it so special. To all the fans who showed love and supported Watson, thank you so much. Thank you to CBS for the incredible partnership,” he wrote via Instagram.

Sweeny and Chestnut executive produce alongside Larry Teng, Shäron Moalem, Aaron Kaplan, and Brian Morewitz. Watson is produced by CBS Studios.

The series finale, “The Cobalt Fissure,” will air on May 3.

Written by Dana Klein based on author Katherine Heiny’s short story, DMV is a single-camera comedy set in the place everyone dreads going most – the Department of Motor Vehicles – where employees are making minimum wage, dealing with customers who are annoyed before they even walk in the door.

The ensemble cast includes Harriet Dyer, Tim Meadows, Tony Cavalero, Molly Kearney, Alex Tarrant, and Gigi Zumbado. Jessica Camacho recurred.

DMV is produced by CBS Studios. Dana Klein, Matt Kuhn, Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling and Robyn Meisinger serve as Executive Producers. Trent O’Donnell executive produced and directed the pilot from a script written by Klein.

The series finale “Impact Will Be Felt” will air on May 11.
