SHEBOYGAN – The U.S. Navy Band Commodores jazz ensemble will perform a free concert Nov. 4 at the Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts.

The concert, which begins at 7 p.m., is part of the band’s 2025 Midwest tour, according to a community announcement. The tour coincides with the U.S. Navy’s 250th birthday, offering jazz and big band fans an opportunity to celebrate the service of sailors worldwide.

Celebrate the Navy’s 250th birthday with a free big band jazz concert by the Commodores in Sheboygan.

The performance is free and open to the public, but some tour concerts may require ticket reservations. For the most up-to-date concert and ticket information, visit the Navy Band’s website at navyband.navy.mil/events.

Concert connects community with Navy

The concert is a family-friendly event designed to connect community members with the Navy. The U.S. Navy Band Commodores will perform a range of big band jazz, from World War II swing-era classics by Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Artie Shaw to modern pieces by Bob Brookmeyer and Pat Metheny. The band will also highlight the music of legendary vocalists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, as well as original compositions by band members.

Formed in 1969, the Commodores are the Navy’s premier jazz ensemble. The 18-member group has been performing big band jazz for more than 50 years. Their mission includes public concerts, national tours, ceremonial support for veterans, jazz education classes and clinics, and protocol performances for high-level military and civilian government officials.

Tickets available at Weill Center

The concert is a free, ticketed event with general admission seating. Tickets can be picked up in person at the Weill Center, 826 N. Eighth St. The ticket office is open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Seats may be released to others if not occupied 10 minutes before showtime.

The U.S. Navy Band is the flagship musical organization of the Navy and one of 11 Navy bands located around the world. Based at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., the band comprises six performing ensembles: the Concert Band, Ceremonial Band, Sea Chanters chorus, Commodores jazz ensemble, Country Current country/bluegrass ensemble and the Cruisers popular music group.

Band members highly educated

Almost all of the sailors in the Navy Band have undergraduate degrees in music, and most have graduate degrees.

The Commodores’ 2023 national tour includes 13 concerts across five states. “Touring the nation and performing concerts means connecting with communities and telling the great stories of our sailors working around the globe to keep us safe and free,” said Cmdr. Robert “Seph” Coats, commanding officer of the U.S. Navy Band.

The concert at the Weill Center is an opportunity for the community to enjoy a night of music while supporting the Navy and its mission. The event is expected to draw a large crowd, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure their seats.

For more information about the concert and to reserve tickets, visit the Navy Band’s website at navyband.navy.mil/events.
