COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Community leaders, local media personalities, and Ohio 4-H members gathered Friday at the Ohio Expo Center to prepare for the Ronald McDonald House Celebrity Steer Show, a unique fundraiser benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio.
The annual event, scheduled for Aug. 5 during the Ohio State Fair, pairs celebrities and community leaders with Ohio 4-H members who teach them the fundamentals of showing cattle before they enter the ring.
Among those participating this year are ABC 6/FOX anchor Rodney Dunigan and Good Day Columbus anchor Katie McKee.
Friday’s practice session gave participants their first opportunity to work hands-on with the steers and learn from the young people who spend countless hours raising, caring for, and training the animals.
The Celebrity Steer Show serves as a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio, which provides housing, meals, and support services for families with children receiving medical treatment.
“It’s great because it connects a really good cause at the Ronald McDonald House and families in need with kids that are at the hospital, but also an opportunity to work with young kids at 4-H,” said Dan Mueller, vice president of tax at AEP and a Ronald McDonald House board member. “I grew up in a small, rural town, and it’s good to connect the community with local families while supporting a good cause.”
Organizers said the event highlights the importance of agriculture, youth leadership, and community involvement while raising critical funding for families facing some of life’s most difficult challenges.
“We have a lot of families who are going through one of the most difficult experiences of their lives with a child in the hospital,” said Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio CEO Dee Anders. “We’re there to support them. We provide a place for them to stay and meals, but the magic that happens at the Ronald McDonald House is that families get to meet each other and support each other.”
The Celebrity Steer Show has become a popular tradition at the Ohio State Fair, drawing attention to both the work of Ohio’s 4-H youth and the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Organizers hope the event will not only raise money for the organization but also encourage more people to get involved through volunteering, donations, and community support.
The Ronald McDonald House Celebrity Steer Show will take place Aug. 5 at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Funds raised during the event will support programs and services for families staying at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio.
