Champaign County will mark Juneteenth with a series of events that highlight the significance of freedom in America.
Observed annually on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
The Juneteenth celebrations in Urbana begin on June 16, with a Food Truck Rally at 201 E. Illinois Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Featuring a variety of local food vendors, the event offers attendees a chance to gather over diverse cuisine while supporting small businesses. Prices vary by vendor.
Also on June 16, the City of Urbana will host “Reflections and Reverence” ceremony at Urbana City Hall Council Chambers (400 S. Vine Street) from 11:00 to 11:15 a.m.
Parkland College will host a luncheon at 11:15 a.m. in the Student Union Cafeteria, followed by remarks at noon from guest speaker Donna Tanner-Harold on June 17. Tanner-Harold is widely recognized for her work in education, mental health advocacy, and community service throughout Champaign County.
On June 18, the Illinois Soul Juneteenth Concert will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana. The free performance will feature Raphael & Whitney, a husband-and-wife duo known for blending gospel, R&B, and soul.
The Urbana Park District will host a Juneteenth Celebration at Prairie Park (2000 E. Washington Street) from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on June 18. This free, family-friendly event is designed to bring the community together with activities, entertainment, and opportunities to celebrate culture and connection in an outdoor setting.
June 19 brings a full day of events across Champaign-Urbana. Beginning at 10:00 a.m., Horizon Climbing will host “Juneteenth Climb for Free,” inviting first-time visitors to participate in climbing activities throughout the day until 10:00 p.m. The event is open to both children and adults, offering an inclusive way to celebrate the holiday.
At 1:00 p.m., multiple events will take place simultaneously. The Urbana Juneteenth Parade and Liberation Celebration will begin at Sunnycrest Center (1805 S. Cottage Grove Avenue) with a parade route through the city and a lively celebration of freedom, culture, and unity. Also at 1:00 p.m., the Crystal Lake Park Family Aquatic Center will host a Juneteenth Celebration at the Pool, with races, contests, and family-friendly activities.
The day concludes with the Juneteenth Concert at Douglass Park (501 E. Eureka Street) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The event will feature a mix of musical styles, including hip hop, jazz, and funk.
