Channing Tatum’s appearance as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine was one of Marvel’s most unanimously loved wild card moves. So much so that a small cameo alongside foul-mouthed Deadpool meta morphed into a full-blown role in an ensemble flick as big as Avengers: Doomsday.
To some, Gambit may seem like just another character portrayal by Tatum that translates to hefty paychecks, but in reality, there is more than meets the eye. To Tatum, Gambit is his childhood dream, his childhood hero. We can only imagine what it means to play your idol. And when Tatum had limited his dreams to just being an X-Men, but then ended up as part of the biggest superhero ensemble that will make history, the emotional weight became heavier than usual.
In an interview with Today, the actor spilled the beans about fulfilling his dream of playing Gambit and then reprising his role in Avengers: Doomsday. He said, “I always dreamed as a kid. I was the kid in Mississippi, like throwing cards at my friends in the front den. To get to play him, my childhood hero, I wanted to be an X-Men, much less be an Avenger. It keeps unfolding, and I can’t believe I get to be a part of it.”
As Gambit transitions from cameo to Multiverse Saga, we hope there is more ahead for Gambit, because clearly, he is rising on the ladder of popularity. Maybe that scrapped solo film that we were getting.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated to hit theatres on December 18, 2026.
