Two GRAMMY winners just put the windows down together. Charles Kelley hits the road with singer-songwriter and producer Richard Marx on their brand-new release “Driving And Listening To Music,” a reimagined version of a track from Kelley’s sophomore solo album ‘Songs For A New Moon’. A behind-the-scenes video capturing their in-studio collaboration premieres exclusively with Atwood Magazine.
The song first appeared on the album, which celebrates its one-year anniversary this week. Written by Kelley alongside Adam Doleac, Devin Dawson, Brad Tursi, and Jordan Schmidt, and produced by Dawson and Schmidt, the original nostalgic cut gets a dynamic new life with Marx aboard. American Songwriter called Kelley one of country music’s most reliable and versatile singers, while PEOPLE praised his ability to transport listeners back to a time when music, and the world around it, simply felt better.
The pairing came together naturally. “I sent Richard the album and let him know if there was ever a song he wanted to sing on, to let me know,” Kelley shares. “He immediately said, ‘Driving And Listening To Music,’ and I was blown away.” Marx tells Atwood Magazine the track stuck with him, recalling that something about it kept him hitting repeat, and that singing with Kelley was a total pleasure.
Marx also stopped by the latest episode of Y’all Aboard Hosted by Charles Kelley on SiriusXM’s Yacht Rock Radio (ch. 15). Each week Kelley invites his music friends to swap stories, spin their favourite Yacht Rock tracks, and occasionally attempt a Michael McDonald impression or two.
Kelley has long stepped outside his default creative setting. As one-third of country trio Lady A and a chart-topping songwriter, he’s co-penned favourites for Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, and Brett Young, and earned a GRAMMY nomination for the title track of his 2016 solo debut ‘The Driver’.
Marx brings four decades of his own chart success to the collaboration. With more than 45 million albums sold, a billion streams, and 14 No. 1 singles, he’s the only male artist in history to send his first seven singles into the Billboard Top 5, and one of only two artists, alongside Michael Jackson, to write a #1 song in four different decades. His hits include “Right Here Waiting” and “Hazard,” and his songwriting credits run from Luther Vandross to Keith Urban to Barbra Streisand. His latest album ‘After Hours’ arrived in January 2026 and debuted at #1 on the Australian ARIA Jazz Chart.
