Cheryl Hines revealed that her husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., once suggested that they stage a separation to shield her from public criticism.
The Curb Your Enthusiasm alum, 60, opened up about their marriage and her adjustment to life in Washington in a new interview with CBS News, published on October 7.
“I don’t think I’ll ever get used to being a political spouse. A Cabinet spouse,” Hines told Natalie Morales.
Hines — who moved to Washington earlier this year after Kennedy, 71, was appointed secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services in President Trump’s Cabinet — recalled the moment her husband proposed the idea of a staged separation to protect her from scrutiny.
“I didn’t understand what, how that was gonna help,” the Unscripted author said. “But I understood what he was talking about. I appreciated it.”

Hines and Kennedy, who married in 2014 after being introduced by Larry David, have navigated challenges together, including public disagreements with some of Kennedy’s siblings. The couple’s blended family includes Hines’ daughter, Cat, and Kennedy’s six children from previous marriages.
During the interview, Hines also admitted that some friends in Hollywood pulled back from their relationship after Kennedy entered politics.
“It became too difficult emotionally for them to stay close,” she said. “And I understand it.”
