Chloé Zhao’s 2026 Oscars look may just inspire a few goth girls’ Halloween costumes:
The “Hamnet” director ominously loomed on the award ceremony’s red carpet wearing a leathery black gown, a snake necklace and a long black veil. The dramatic look was very Morticia Addams coded, but suitable for the director of “Hamnet,” a film that centers on the family life of William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his wife Anne “Agnes” Hathaway (Jessie Buckley) as they cope with the death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet (Jacobi Jupe). Zhao is nominated for a Best Director Oscar for her work on the film.
The look could also have doubled as a mourning outfit for the cancellation of the upcoming “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot, titled “Buffy: New Sunnydale,” which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and “The Lowdown” star Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Zhao directed.
“I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her,” Gellar said. “And how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”
