Chris Brown has scored his 13th top ten album with his latest effort, Brown.
As reported by Billboard, the 27-track album (which runs 92-minutes long) has debuted at the No. 7 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The album garnered 65,00 equivalent album units within its first week of availability, of which 60,000 were from 60.31 million on-demand streams of individual tracks. Last week, Hits Daily Double reported that the record was projected to land at No. 5 with 70,000 equivalent album units.
Noah Kahan’s The Great Divide clung on to its No. 1 spot for the third consecutive week, while Ella Langley’s Dandelion also refused to budge with its second week at No. 2. K-pop boyband CORTIS scored their first-ever top 10 record with GREENGREEN at No. 3, and Morgan Wallen’s I’m the Problem also stuck around at No. 4. Following the release of the Michael Jackson biopic last month, the late popstar placed at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots with Thriller and Number Ones, respectively.
Brown debuted to an enthusiastic response from fans earlier this month, but it’s so far failed to break containment from his dedicated fanbase. There hasn’t been a glowing critical reception to the record, either, with Pitchfork critic Alphonse calling the album “a real piece of shit” in a brutal takedown, ultimately rewarding it with a low rating of just 1.3 out of 10. The review was subsequently hit with backlash from Brown’s fanbase, as well as fellow R&B artist Tank.
Earlier this month, Brown thanked his fanbase while addressing the criticism he’s faced.
“Just wanna say thank you to everyone who listened to this album,” Brown wrote on his Instagram Stories. “Been a lot of mixed reviews and I can take my audience’s criticism and opinions. The last 3 albums have came under the same scrutiny and it eventually grew on people. Thank you for even taking the time out to listen.”
He later addressed the negative reception a second time and said that he wasn’t letting the criticism get to him.
“I don’t give a fuck what these n***as is talkin’ about,” Brown added in his IG Stories. “I know exactly who my fans is and I know exactly who hearing this album. If you not my fan, I don’t want you to listen to my shit. Go listen to motherfuckin’ Zara Larsson or somebody. Fuck them.”
