Talk about a wingwoman!
Christina Aguilera just became Grindr’s newest sound. Starting September 15 through September 22, the LGBTQ+ app is swapping its trademark “ping” notification for the first notes of Aguilera’s 1999 No. 1, “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You).”
The limited-time switch is tied to the singer’s September 20 headlining slot at San Francisco’s Portola Music Festival. Of course, Grindr announced the takeover in suitably camp fashion.
“We’re giving Xtina the keys, because from one gay icon to another, the famous Grindr bloop deserves nothing less,” the company wrote on its website.
Aguilera, for her part, leaned into the moment. “Portola, Grindr and me? That’s a threesome I can get behind,” she said in a statement. “When that ‘Come on Over’ sound hits at the festival, or wherever you’re celebrating, I hope things get spicy!”
Brand execs framed the stunt as a nod to a pop icon whose music has long been embraced by queer audiences.
“The Grindr bloop is one of most iconic sounds in gay pop culture,” Tristan Pineiro, Grindr’s SVP Brand Marketing and Communication, said in a statement. “But when Christina Aguilera enters the chat, we give her the stage… This is our tribute to a queen, replacing our iconic Grindr ‘bloop’ for Christina’s equally iconic lyrics. Whether you’re at Portola or inviting someone to Come On Over, Grindr is making sure everyone can get in on the fun.”
The sound swap is automatic for U.S. users with notifications enabled.
Portola Music Festival runs September 20–21 at Pier 80 in San Francisco, featuring a bill that includes Mau P, Horse Meat Disco, LCD Soundsystem, The Prodigy, and more.
If Christina tells us to come over, who are we to deny her?
