If there was ever any doubt that The Odyssey is the movie of the summer, its impressive opening weekend put that to rest. Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem launched with an estimated $264.1 million worldwide, cementing the film as Nolan’s biggest opening weekend box office success since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises.
Clearly, the 2-hour 52-minute runtime didn’t deter audiences — and neither did the fact that only 25 U.S. theaters are showing the epic specifically as Nolan intended, in all its IMAX 70mm glory.
The stellar cast and crew added to the appeal. The cast included four Oscar winners — Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron — and two Oscar acting nominees, Samantha Morton and Elliot Page. And that’s not even including Hollywood’s power couple Zendaya and Tom Holland.

The reviews have been strong, too. Yahoo’s Brett Arnold called it a ”career-best” for Damon, saying it ”delivers everything you’d want from an epic of this size and scale.” The Associated Press called it an ”earthy, existential epic” and awarded it 3.5 out of four stars, while the film emerged from its opening weekend with a 95% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
