Cork actor and filmmaker Cillian Murphy is among a group of celebrities who have come together to release a video message in support of Palestine.
The video message for Together For Palestine, which also featured Irish actors Sharon Horgan of Chris O’Dowd of DJ Annie Mac and presenter Laura Whitmore, was released on Wednesday ahead of a benefit show in London’s OVO Arena Wembley.
While Murphy has not previously spoken overtly on the genocide in Gaza, his friend and writer of Murphy’s new film, Max Porter, addressed the issue during a Q&A following the film’s European premiere in Cork city on Saturday.
Porter was met with a round of applause at Cork Opera House when, sharing a stage with Murphy, he spoke of the difficulty of making and promoting the film as the situation in Gaza continues to unfold.
“Almost every single hour of every single day of that entire almost 800 days, a child has been murdered in Palestine,” said Porter.
The Wembley concert, which takes place on Wednesday, is a one-night gathering of musicians and artists that aims to raise vital funds for Gaza while creating a public expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The lineup for the show, which will be live-streamed on YouTube, includes artists such as Bastille, Damon Albarn, James Blake, Jamie xx, and Sampha, alongside Palestinian artists Adnan Joubran, Faraj Suleiman, and Nai Barghouti.
Speaking ahead of the gig on Wednesday, organiser Brian Eno, said: “This is about more than just money. It’s about sending a message of love and solidarity to the people of Palestine — that they haven’t been forgotten. We see them, we hear them, and though we may be far away, we’re deeply connected — as we are to all humanity. Please join us on 17th September. Together, for Palestine.”
Artists such as Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, and actors such as Joaquin Phoenix and Steve Coogan are also among those to appear in the video message.
