Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner and events are kicking off today! Enjoy good eats and beats at The Kitchen, run or walk for a good cause, or indulge in some adult beverages this weekend.

Thursday

🎨 Explore the migration from pre-colonial West Africa at an artist talk for 2025 Emerging Artist Fellow Mobolaji Ayeni’s “Caravan” on Thursday. The exhibition at Playground Detroit honors ancestral histories and diasporic identities through layered paintings. It’s on display through Saturday. Free. 

🌮 🎧 Enjoy good food and great music at Tacos and Turnables at The Kitchen by Cooking with Que on Thursday. DJs, producers and food lovers can dance to live sets, enjoy tacos and nachos, and even sign up to do their own mini set! $20.

😵‍💫 Laugh at the awkward things in life at “Awkward Exchange,” an interactive comedy show at The Independent Comedy Club in Hamtramck on Thursday. Local headliners Jason Jamerson and Melanie Hearn will give witty but insightful jokes complete with awkward exchanges, stories, and audience participation. $12.51.

👗Celebrate the creativity of the Motor City at the Design Detroit Fashion Showcase at Wayne County Community College District’s eastern campus on Friday. Fashion design students, local designers and community sponsors will present their work to highlight the unique couture of the city. Free. 

🏃 Support mental health awareness at the annual Cinco de Mile 5K Run/Walk, which begins at Patton Recreation Center on Saturday. Participants will get a T-shirt and a registration bag full of resources and promotions. Pets are welcome! Sign up here. $40.

💿 Get your hands on some vintage records at Detroit Vinylfest on Sunday at Eastern Market Shed 5. More than 70 vendors will sell CDs, tapes, books, creative arts and more for all the collectors out there. Free to browse. 

🎉 Party at “the best parade in Southwest Detroit” at the annual Cinco de Mayo Parade on Sunday. The parade travels a 2.5-mile stretch along West Vernor Highway, featuring hundreds of floats, school marching bands, Mariachis, Charros, local businesses, and of course, the Miss Mexico Pageant Queen and her court. Free. 

👣 Help normalize running and walking in our neighborhoods at the first Sunday Runday starting outside The Love Building on Sunday. Get your steps in as the weather warms up for summer. Free.

Next week

🧩 Gather with others living with memory loss of dementia (and their caregivers) at Mosaic Memory Cafe on Wednesday at Robert C. Valade Park. The multi-day art and wellness experience will include light movement and exercise, a guided art-making experience and a closing reception. Free.

🎶 Jam out to smooth vocals and classic jams at DABO Detroit’s Community Entertainment Series with Christopher Williams at The Bridge Center on Wednesday. Williams, known for his role in “New Jack City,” will bring an intimate performance to the city, plus participants can enjoy free health screenings on site. Free.
