Cineverse to Show Pan's Labyrinth in Theaters for 20th Anniversary

According to a Deadline exclusive, Cineverse has acquired the rights to Guillermo del Toro’s critically acclaimed Pan’s Labyrinth with the intent to re-release the film for the movie’s 20th Anniversary next year. The film is easily responsible for making Guillermo del Toro a household name and is considered one of the best movies he has ever made. The film displays a stark contrast between fantasy and reality, centering around a young girl who is gifted the ability to travel between worlds. Yet, her travels to the mysterious labyrinth often parallel events that happen in her reality.

The ‘Among Us’ TV show is better than it has any right to be

To say that there hadn’t been anything like Pan’s Labyrinth produced before 2006 wouldn’t necessarily be accurate. However, it is easily the most well-known movie in the genre of bridging fantasy and reality. Del Toro weaves a beautifully twisted tale that is heavily supported by the impossibly realistic creatures that inhabit his world.

As much as del Toro contributed to the film with his writing and directing, the film’s biggest draws are in its makeup and practical effects. The intricate but fantasy-oriented designs of the Pale Man and the Faun are as groundbreaking today as they were upon the film’s release. They easily equal or surpass the visuals of many modern films. This somewhat proves that practical effects and costumes will always be more effective than fully-CGI creations.

The film is responsible for making Guillermo del Toro a household name, and it easily skyrocketed his filmmaking career. Since then, he has created the popular Hellboy movies, The Shape of Water, and, most recently, Frankenstein, all of which have received endless critical acclaim or countless accolades. While not everyone was thrilled by del Toro’s recent films, many agree that it is the most faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley’s work thus far.

Cineverse probably plans to re-release Pan’s Labyrinth near the anniversary date of its premiere, which means fans might have to wait until December 2026 to see the film in theaters. The film is likely to retain its R-rating and could become one of the highest-generating R-rated films outside of superhero films like Deadpool. As of now, it remains unclear if Cineverse plans to remaster the film in any way, but it’s more than likely that the movie will be updated to adhere to modern visual standards.

Given the profound impact of Pan’s Labyrinth, the film could end up becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 2026. The incredible movie has been critically acclaimed constantly since its initial release, and it isn’t surprising whatsoever given its quality. The film’s re-release could also distract from other important projects set to take place within the year. However, modern films being unable to compete with a movie released over two decades ago could be a welcome wake-up call to current filmmakers.
