REDDING, Calif. — The City of Redding is set to discuss the potential creation of entertainment zones in its downtown area, following the passage of Senate Bill 969. This legislation allows California cities to establish public areas where individuals aged 21 and over can legally possess and consume open container alcoholic beverages purchased from licensed businesses on public streets, sidewalks and other public areas.
City Council Member Tenessa Audette expressed optimism about the opportunity this presents for Redding, particularly with the ongoing development downtown.
“As we decide on the area, as we determine those first steps, then an entire safety plan will be created around how we actually get the best outcome out of that decision and mitigate the negative aspects that could happen,” said Audette.
Audette emphasized that the vision for these entertainment zones will be shaped by public input, influenced by the types of investors and businesses interested in participating. The city will handle zoning for the potential project, while the community will play a role in its creation.
Audette’s goal for Redding’s economic future is to ensure it remains fiscally sound and transparent with the public.
