DeKALB -– On Monday, the City Council discussed a proposed entertainment district downtown, allowing patrons to carry beverages from one place to another to increase activity in the evening hours.

If the proposal is passed, bars and restaurants would have the opportunity to join this district and would be marked with a sign indicating their involvement.

Patrons would register with their ID at the first business where they receive alcohol, then they would receive a paper wristband. The wristband would allow patrons to travel to different properties with their drinks, which would stop being sold after 9:30 p.m.

This would allow patrons to carry alcoholic beverages from one place to another without constantly being carded.

“What I’m most excited about is that our downtown merchants will be able to create new events and things that they want to do. This can help facilitate,” Mayor Cohen Barnes said.

The City Council also voted to approve the first reading of amendments to certain municipal codes for the Landmark Commission, Citizen Police Review Board, Human Relations Commission, Citizens’ Environmental Commission and the Citizens’ Community Enhancement Commission, removing the requirement that each body hold a specified number of meetings annually.

“There are times when you’ll see planning and zoning are not going to meet because there’s nothing on the agenda,” Alderman Barb Larson said.

Aldermen Carolyn Zasada, John Walker and Mike Verbic disagreed with this proposal, saying that it wasn’t clear enough to agree with.

Overall, the first reading passed in a 5 out-of-8 vote and will begin the second reading at 6 p.m. on April 27 in the DeKalb Public Library.
