CLEVELAND — The Guardians’ chase for a playoff spot continues with a matchup against fellow Wild Card contender Kansas City Royals Sept. 9 at Progressive Field.
Slade Cecconi flirted with a no-hitter Sept. 8, and the Guardians offense reached double digits in a near-perfect win. Though, it was just one step in a difficult path the Guardians must take to secure a playoff spot. Projections say Cleveland needs to go 15-5 over their final 20 games.

The Guardians have again picked up a key win over the Royals, beating K.C. 2-0.
Joey Cantillo gave up a single on the first pitch of the ninth inning and was pulled in favor of Cade Smith. The Royals eventually put runners on the corners, but Smith struck out Salvador Perez to end the game.
The Guardians starting pitchers have completely shut down the Royals lineup this series (thus far).
Cantillo is through eight scoreless innings on only 91 pitches, putting him in range for a Maddux (shutout on 100 or fewer pitches). He’s allowed only three hits and struck out five.
The Royals have scored only two runs in the first 17 innings of the series, and both were in garbage time last night.
Also to note: Cantillo’s fastball is averaging 92.4 mph tonight, a 1.4 mph increase over his season average. That, in combination with his changeup, has had KC fooled.

The Guardians are maintaining a 2-0 lead.
Jose Ramirez and David Fry each doubled down the line — Ramirez to the right, Fry to the left — to score a run and give the Guardians a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The no-hit bid was broken up early, but Joey Cantillo has thrown four scoreless innings to maintain Cleveland’s 1-0 lead.
Through those four innings, he’s given up just two hits. And while he isn’t blowing any hitters away — he hasn’t recorded a strikeout yet — he also hasn’t given up much hard contact, either, while keeping the Royals off balance.
The Guardians’ momentum from last night appears to have carried over, as Jose Ramirez in the first inning drilled a solo home run that has given Cleveland a 1-0 lead against the Royals.
That’s home run No. 28 for him this season.
