The Furman Symphony Orchestra will present a concert Thursday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium on campus. The performance, “Emerging Artists,” is open to the public and is part of Furman’s Cultural Life Program. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors 60 and older and Furman faculty and staff, and $10 for students. Furman students with I.D. are admitted at no charge.
Join the Furman Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Stephan Fillare, for an evening celebrating vibrant color, rhythmic energy and expressive storytelling in orchestral music. The program features George Gershwin’s “Three Preludes,” presented in an adaptation by Furman student Thomas Witt that brings Gershwin’s unmistakable blend of jazz and classical style to the orchestral stage.
The concert also showcases the 2025–2026 Concerto Competition winners in two featured solo performances: Caroline James, flute, appears in Gordon Jacob’s “Concerto for Flute and Strings,” a work prized for its lyricism and clarity, while Rebecca Wirth, saxophone, performs Jacques Ibert’s “Concertino da Camera,” a virtuosic and colorful highlight of the saxophone repertoire.
Also featured is William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 3, “The Sunday Symphony,” an uplifting and reflective work inspired by the rhythms and spirit of African American church music, offering a radiant and affirming musical experience.
