Anyone who’s seen the classic whodunit “Clue” knows the mystery has multiple endings.
Who is the killer?
Well, that depends on various circumstances and implements.
The film is based on the board game of the same name (originally known as “Cluedo” in the United Kingdom), whose weapons include the rope, wrench, lead pipe, knife, gun and candlestick.
When “Clue” was released in 1985, each theater screened one of three endings.
And when the movie hit home video, you could watch all the endings in succession:
“How it Could Have Happened.”
“How About This?”
“Here’s What Really Happened.”
This week, “Clue” is headed back to theaters for its 40th anniversary with the original rollout.
“Flames.” Madeline Kahn as Mrs. White.
Theatergoers will get one of three endings per screening.
“Clue,” released Dec. 13, 1985, didn’t perform well at the box office but became a beloved murder mystery in later years through home video.
In the film, written and directed by Jonathan Lynn (“My Cousin Vinny”), six guests are summoned to a mansion on a foreboding night.
These distinguished guests are greeted by Wadsworth the butler, played by Tim Curry.
Madeline Kahn plays Mrs. White, Eileen Brennan plays Mrs. Peacock, Martin Mull plays Colonel Mustard, Michael McKean plays Mr. Green, Lesley Ann Warren plays Miss Scarlet and Christopher Lloyd plays Professor Plum.
The 40th anniversary of the whodunit offers one of three endings.
It isn’t long before the bodies start piling up, and everyone’s a suspect.
The 40th anniversary screenings are running Friday, Aug. 22 through Tuesday, Aug. 26.
Showings are labeled “ending one,” “ending two” and “ending three.”
“Clue,” rated PG, runs 1 hour and 27 minutes.
