COLDWATER, MI – The city will host its third annual Cultural Jubilee at Tibbits Plaza and South Hanchett Street on Saturday, May 16 in downtown Coldwater.
Afternoon displays, music, and presentations will showcase the many cultures that now call Coldwater home.
Events take place on the terrace and street in front of Tibbits Opera House.
From 1 to 6 p.m., visitors can experience a variety of cultures.
Scheduled performances
- The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi will present a Pow Wow exhibition, lead a participatory drum circle and offer a community land acknowledgment.
- Samer will perform the Dabke, a traditional Arab dance.
- Ballet Folklorico will present a Spanish Flamenco dance.
- Yemeni Traditional Dance by Yemeni American Community Members
- Sound of Haiti will perform Haitian music and songs.
- Meira will serve as DJ and host, sharing music that celebrates the community’s cultural diversity between performances.
The Coldwater Community Center organizes the event. President and Volunteer Executive Director Kathy Bappert said, “We want to celebrate the many cultures invested in our community through music, dance, and food.”
“We’ve extended the hours this year so the Haitian band can play later, since many members work during the day,” Bappert explained.
This schedule may also help with the weather: morning showers are expected, but the afternoon should clear with temperatures in the 70s.
Vendors will offer native foods and items from each culture.
The Coldwater High School soccer team will participate in a Futsal 3-on-3 tournament and demonstration on Hanchett Street.
Supporting organizations include the Branch District Library, Tibbits Opera House, AIRA of Coldwater, Coldwater Main Street, and the Branch County Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence.
Sponsors providing grants include Meijer, Coldwater Board of Public Utilities, Branch County Community Foundation, Coldwater Main Street, Michigan Gas Utilities, Coldwater Sunrise Rotary, Consumers Energy, Early Bird Exchange Club, Clemens Food Group, and Altrusa.
The Cultural Jubilee began in 2022 as the Cultivating Community Celebration at Tibbits.
In 2023, community organizations created the street fair, expanding the celebration of local cultural diversity with music, food, displays, and vendors.
