The line between the real-life Olympics and the fictional world of hockey seen in Heated Rivalry just got a little blurred. Hosting Saturday Night Live last night, series lead Connor Storrie brought the two spheres together—with some help from his co-star, Hudson Williams, and United States women’s hockey teammates Megan Keller and Hilary Knight.
The freshly-crowned gold medalists stepped on stage for the actor’s opening monologue, joking that while they were supposed to appear alone, they figured they’d “invite the guys too”—referring to U.S. men’s athletes Jack and Quinn Hughes, who also joined the group on stage. “We thought we’d give them a little moment to shine,” Keller teased.
The women then reminded the audience that while the brothers’ team hadn’t won gold in over 40 years, theirs stepped up to the top podium just “two Olympics ago.”
The episode—and playful rivalry—took place mere days after the US men’s hockey team received backlash for celebrating their Olympic victory with FBI director Kash Patel and a phone call with President Trump—during which the team laughed as the president joked that he would be “impeached” for not inviting the U.S. women’s hockey team to the White House as well. The women’s team later declined Trump’s invitation—though, of course, accepted Storrie’s.
Wrapping up his monologue, Storrie spoke about Heated Rivalry and the importance of representation. “My show speaks to people who are not always represented in hockey,” he said. “So this is really great to have actual hockey legends here tonight.”
Later in the episode, Williams joined his on-screen love interest and the SNL cast for an ice-rink skit, in which a bachelor party disrupted a rejected proposal. He also stepped up on stage to help announce musical guest Mumford & Sons.
