It’s been revealed how Prince William and Kate privately reacted to Prince Harry’s dramatic departure from royal life when he quit The Firm six years ago.
New intimate details have emerged in the new royal biography, William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, written by Mirror royal editor Russell Myers and set to be published on March 10.
Excerpts from the new book were released in The Mirror, and divulged details about Prince William’s true feelings about the highly publicised exit of his younger brother Harry.
“William was intensely saddened at his brother’s decision to quit. He and Harry had been drifting apart for years, but now he knew deep down that there would be no turning back,” Myers wrote.
William treasured the childhood he had with Harry and the pair were bonded together by their mother’s death and growing up in the public eye – but the brothers have since been divided with their relationship “tarnished”.
Myers described the Princess of Wales as “an outsider” who had witnessed the breakdown of William and Harry’s relationship.
According to the author, Kate also allegedly believed Harry and Meghan had an “agenda” as their increasingly “difficult” behaviour departed from the royal values William and Kate embodied after their wedding in 2018.
She also believed the couple had become embroiled in bitterness at having to follow royal protocol and the hierarchy of the monarchy – therefore she was not surprised when Harry and Megan announced their departure and moved to California.
However, Kate believed the divide between the monarchy’s “heir and spare” made Harry’s exit unavoidable.
As tensions worsened, she reportedly stopped trying to mediate, accepting she “could do no more” to reunite the brothers, with Harry “wanting more from his role than being a bit-part player”.
The book teased further details such as Kate initially liking Meghan, attempting to help her adjust to royal life and bring her into The Firm.
This was prior to the tensions that emerged when tabloids harassed Harry and Meghan in the press, and it became clear the new couple started to clash with the royal family.
The Duke of Sussex and the Prince of Wales have reportedly not spoken since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022.
