The upcoming “Harry Potter” series could be going in a very different direction from the movies with one casting decision.
Earlier this month, insider Daniel Richtman, who is known for entertainment industry leaks, wrote via X that the HBO series is “auditioning both men and women” for the role of Lord Voldemort.
“It’s possible we could see a female Voldemort in the Harry Potter series,” Richtman continued.
NJ.com has reached out to HBO for comment.
Ralph Fiennes played the role of Voldemort in the “Harry Potter” film series. The infamous wizard’s real name is Tom Riddle, but he’s also known as The Dark Lord and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
Distorted from the mutilation of his soul through the creation of horcruxes, Fiennes’ Voldemort was bald and pale with two nostril slits instead of a nose. Time will tell if the “Harry Potter” television series has a different take on the evil wizard.
Several fans threw out Tilda Swinton as a woman who could pull off the iconic role.

“If they’re thinking a Tilda Swinton type casting, then I’m all for it,” one X user wrote.
“Idk how i feel about this, but tilda swilton as voldemort would go hard,” another chimed in.
Swinton has experience portraying the villain in a fantasy series based on books. She played the White Witch in the “Chronicles of Narnia” films.

While Voldemort’s casting remains up in the air, most of the other roles have been assigned.
The “Harry Potter” series cast includes Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley), Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger), John Lithgow (Albus Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (Minerva McGonagall), Paapa Essiedu (Severus Snape), Nick Frost (Rubeus Hagrid), Luke Thallon (Quirinus Quirrell), Paul Whitehouse (Argus Filch), Lox Pratt (Draco Malfoy), Johnny Flynn (Lucius Malfoy), Rory Wilmot (Neville Longbottom), and Gracie Cochrane (Ginny Weasley).
The “Harry Potter” series is slated to premiere in 2027. The “Harry Potter” films are available to stream on HBO Max.
