NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Vince Gill, one of country music’s most decorated artists, will be honored with the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the 59th Annual CMA Awards on Wednesday, Nov. 19, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The ceremony, airing live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on ABC, will include a tribute performance celebrating Gill’s five-decade career.
Gill joins a list of past honorees including Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn and George Strait.
According to a news release from the CMA awards, the award is presented to a figure in country music whose career has reached the highest levels of recognition and influence. The honor celebrates artists who have made a lasting impact both nationally and internationally through their music, charitable work and public presence.
Recipients are recognized not only for their artistic achievements—such as record sales, streaming success, and live performances—but also for their contributions to the growth and legacy of the genre over time.
“Vince Gill has had a long and storied career in music, from his days fronting Pure Prairie League, going solo and having several number one country hits and as collaborator with folks such as Reba McEntire,” said Malcolm X Abram, a music and entertainment reporter for cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer. “As a singer with a warm tenor and a country-pickin’ guitarist he’s managed to amass more than 20 Grammys along with numerous Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association awards. His dedication to the music and sustained success are certainly worthy of being feted.”
Gill, an Oklahoma native and Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, has released 20 albums, sold more than 30 million records and charted 45 singles, the release says.
He has collaborated with bands including Pure Prairie League, The Cherry Bombs and The Time Jumpers. Since 2017, he has also toured with the Eagles.
“He gives back to the community, honors the roots of our genre and continues to share his talent with fans across the globe,” CMA CEO Sarah Trahern said in a statement.
Gill has hosted the CMA Awards 12 times and holds 18 CMA wins, including a record-setting four Song of the Year honors.
Gill’s breakthrough came in 1990 with “When I Call Your Name,” which earned him both CMA Single and Song of the Year awards, along with a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance, Male. He has since won 22 Grammy Awards, including his most recent in 2021 for “When My Amy Prays.”
In addition to his musical accolades, Gill received the CMA Irving Waugh Award of Excellence in 2014 and the CMA Foundation Humanitarian Award in 2017.
According to the CMA news release, to mark his 50th year in music, Gill is releasing a series of EPs titled “50 Years from Home” on MCA Records. The first installment, “I Gave You Everything I Had,” debuted on Oct. 17.
