Chris Lane is releasing new music this week, and the country artist has posted a couple of videos to social media with clips of his latest song. With the very first line, ’90s kids will instantly recognize a familiar tune.
Lane, who is married to former Bachelor winner Lauren (Bushnell) Lane, is known for his modern, contemporary country style with storytelling lyrics. Many of his songs combine pop-song elements, like his 2015 breakout song, “Fix,” and 2020’s “Big, Big, Plans,” making them quickly rise to the charts.
In his latest new music tease, Lane starts off singing some all too familiar lyrics—”Cause you, you got what I need,” calling all ’90s teens to the dancefloor with a classic line from Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend.”
Fans are psyched to hear the rest of this mashup, as they revealed in the comments.
“We had the best music back in the day! So happy to hear this!” one fan chimed in.
“A millennial’s dream song🔥,” another said.
Yet another gave props to Lane’s ability to revamp an old classic, “Can always count on you to sample the best throwbacks 🫡.”
A couple of other fans couldn’t help but throw some love out for the late hip-hop artist himself, “Love some Biz Markie!” one said. “This sounds so familiar 😂,” shared another.
Lane’s new single, “Friend” is due out Jan. 16 and he’s revealed in another Instagram reel that he’ll be debuting it live at his Raleigh, NC show on Thursday, January 15.
Returning to North Carolina to kick off the Life is a Highway tour with Rascal Flatts and Lauren Alaina is a full-circle moment for the 41-year-old country singer, as Chris Lane grew up in Kernersville, NC.
Lane was the lead singer of his band, the Chris Lane Band, before he began recording as a solo artist, releasing his first album, Girl Problems, in 2016. Since then, he has put out 2 additional albums: Laps Around the Sun in 2018 and Shade Tree in 2025. The singer has also released several singles that weren’t officially put on any of his albums.
As for his latest single, Lane hasn’t yet announced if it will be followed by more music or named an album for it. Whether “Friend” is a standalone release or the first hint at a bigger project, Lane’s nostalgic-meets-modern tease already has fans ready to hit play — and sing along.
