Country music star Joe Nichols revealed that a record label scrapped one of his songs over a lyric about Jesus Christ. While chatting with Dillon Weldon on the Drifting Cowboy podcast, Nichols recalled what happened.

“We had a song called ‘We All Carry Something.’ I was on Red Bow at the time,” he began. “It’s a brilliant song and it’s a beautiful vocal. These verses are very powerful. We talk about a baby that was born addicted to alcohol because of the mama and a boy that grew up in a trailer park and, you know, kind of got roughed up by his pops. Just heart-wrenching story after story. And the message is we all carry something. We’re all carrying some stuff,” he explained.

“And the last payoff verse was about Jesus,” he continued. “He carried that cross through those city streets for us. We all carry something, He carried it all. One of the leaders at the label said, ‘We need a lyric change on this song and then we can potentially put this out as a single,’ and they suggested something a little more generic.”

Nichols refused to change the lyric, so the label refused to release the song, scrapping it altogether. Years later, however, Nichols released the track, “We All Carry Something” is featured on his 2017 album, Never Gets Old.

A clip from the podcast was shared on Nichols’ Instagram account on Oct. 12. Fans reacted to the story in the comments section of the post.

“Bless you and all your talents,” one person wrote.

“Way to go, Joe Nichols! You will be blessed,” someone else said.

Nichols’ most recent single, “Goodbyes Are Hard to Listen To,” was released earlier this month.
