Everyone who makes music for a living approaches the creative process differently, but some, like Courtney Elle, take a more unique approach than others. The vocalist and songwriter re-emerges today with the premiere of her new single “Juke.” When you press play on the track, it’s immediately evident that this isn’t just any derivative modern pop track. There’s lots of flavour and vibe to this song, mixing up different musical styles and time periods to offer something different. The song is bouncy enough, like any good pop song, but it features a classic R&B feel and a disco vibe.
“Juke” is indicative of the new songs Elle has been developing with her songwriting partner and producer, Darrell Lawrence. As a Grammy-nominated and award-winning producer, Lawrence brings a lot to the table. Their shared love of ’80s funk and pop really came together on “Juke,” a nice display of the musical chemistry they have developed together. Lawrence has pushed Elle to take on the challenge of more complex vocal runs, which has made her a more accomplished vocalist.
Discussing the song, Elle states:
“‘Juke’ is a 1940s-inspired party video that plays with reality versus perception: in my world, a dive bar morphs into The Cotton Club or The Savoy, mirroring the way my music holds fun and depth in the same breath. The track’s off-the-cuff ‘rubber chicken and stanky leg’ line was born from pure studio goofing, folded into a narrative that captures a juxtaposition of the silly and the serious.”
What Elle and Lawrence accomplish in the studio is no easy feat. They make funky music that is both vintage and future-facing. Elle’s unique approach to her music includes treating every release like a mini film. She draws from her primary inspirations, such as her love of period dramas like Downton Abbey, along with a keen interest in design, architecture and the nuances of communications in different eras. Elle views period pieces with much admiration, particularly enjoying their elegance and refinement.
Part of what has motivated Lawrence to be so devoted to working with Elle is these kinds of rare qualities. Her objectives are not to just sound like every other young female pop singer. Her goals are more in line with etching out her own place within the space of modern music, with a focus on quality and ingenuity. Elle enjoys paying tribute to the great singers and female artists she grew up with. But her career has become more focused on making music that reflects her own lived reality, and making her own mark with style and originality.
