Netflix‘s “Stranger Things” series finale aired Dec. 31, marking the conclusion of the remarkable show’s nearly decade-long run.
The show’s creators, brothers Ross and Matt Duffer, recently touched on whether the beloved sci-fi drama would ever return.
“I feel like this season really, truly does close the door on this story, on the story of Hawkins, and the story of the Upside Down and the story of these characters,” Ross Duffer told Entertainment Tonight in an interview.
However, the show runner did not completely close the door on a Stranger Things return in the future.
“I guess never say never,” Duffer said. “(Maybe) in 20 years, if we’re all broke and need some money (and) we’ve all talked about it.”
The directors described the idea as their “safety net” in case they need work in the future.
Although fans would love to see a “Stranger Things” return, the show’s actors share similar sentiments to the creators.
“If there’s a story when we’re all in very, very different stages of our lives, maybe,” Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler in the show, told Entertainment Tonight. “But I think that the whole point of the show ending is because it’s run its course.”
Netflix even addressed an online conspiracy that the show would release a special ninth episode of the final season soon.
On Wednesday, the streaming giant shot down speculation of a return by updating the bios of the show’s social media accounts with a message: “ALL EPISODES OF STRANGER THINGS ARE NOW PLAYING.”
The iconic show’s end is done for now. But as the show’s fanbase knows, you can never rule out a strange occurrence.
