Culver City might soon be the next Los Angeles neighborhood to allow visitors to walk around with their alcoholic beverages!
Following the California state law allowing “Outdoor Entertainment Zones,” Culver City is the next neighborhood hoping to revitalize its local businesses.
In April, the Culver City City Council unanimously introduced an ordinance to create a Downtown Entertainment Zone. The ordinance “would allow patrons to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating businesses and consume them within a designated area during permitted events.” Officials hope the zone will “support economic activity, increase foot traffic, and enhance the visitor experience in Downtown Culver City.”
The news follows Santa Monica’s debut of its Drink And Shop zone last summer, where they designated spots where visitors can walk around with alcoholic beverages.
Where is this Downtown Entertainment Zone?
The planned area includes the Downtown Business Improvement District from Culver Boulevard to Washington Boulevard, as well as side streets Main Street, Cardiff Avenue, and Watseka Avenue.
When would I be able to drink?
The zone would only be activated during approved special events, like the Culver City Car Show or Independence Celebration. The zones will presumably have their own hours of operations and would require a specific police and private security presence.
Can I bring my own alcohol?
No.
Alcohol can only be purchased from participating businesses. Visitors would also have to wear city-approved wristbands showing they are 21 or older. Drinks cannot leave the zone or be carried into another business, and can only be carried in approved holders.
