Dakota Johnson leaned into modern minimalism with her strapless Valentino look at the Governors Awards 2025 red carpet in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
The “Splitsville” star, who collaborated with award-winning stylist Kate Young on her look, turned to Valentino‘s spring 2026 ready-to-wear collection. The strapless gown featured a sweetheart neckline with fabric ruching and gathered elements at the skirt.

Subtle patterning was also included in the design of the dress’ fabric, creating a movement-based illusion to the overall look. Structurally minimalist, Johnson’s dress included a cinched waist for silhouette definition and gathered fabric at the hip for added depth to the flowing skirt.
As for accessories, Johnson favored jewelry pieces from Jessica McCormack, including earrings and dainty rings to add a touch of shimmer to her muted look. Her hair was styled straight and down with fringe to frame her face, and signature makeup elements like lined eyes and a neutral lip were incorporated into her look.

Johnson was officially named a Valentino global ambassador in October, appearing in her first campaign for the Italian luxury fashion house earlier this November. “Nothing brings me more joy than collaborating with people I love, admire and respect,” Johnson told WWD of the new partnership. “I am so grateful and happy to join the Valentino family. Alessandro [Michele] is one of the most inspiring people I know, and I’m honored to be with him again.”
Given her newfound professional relationship with the fashion house, its not a total surprise the actress and stylist Kate Young favored a piece from Valentino’s most recent collection. The spring 2026 ready-to-wear curation, which debuted as part of Paris Fashion Week in October, saw creative director Alessandro Michele returning to his roots and capturing “the magic he felt as a young designer,” per Joelle Diderich’s WWD review of the collection.

“His spring collection harked back to another incredible time: founder Valentino Garavani’s hedonistic existence in Rome in the early ‘80s. Michele tried to distill the essence of that period with items like puff-sleeved blouses, jackets with bows and pencil skirts,” Diderich wrote of the collection.
The 2025 Governors Awards, presented by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, celebrated actor Tom Cruise, production designer Wynn Thomas and actress Debbie Allen with honorary Oscars in Los Angeles on Sunday night. Dolly Parton, in absentia, received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her philanthropic endeavors.
