Before she passed away, Asha Bhosle lent her voice to the fictional British band, the Gorillaz, for their latest album, Parvat. Inspired by Indian culture, the album had many elements that tied it to Indian music; from the instruments to the voice, everything fell into place. The singer had also talked about how important her song was.
Her loss has been a deeply tragic one, and as such, people have been sharing tributes to her and expressing just how much they loved and adored her. The lead for Gorillaz has also done the same.
The Gorillaz Pay Respects to Asha Bhosle
Through the Gorillaz’s Instagram, Damon Albarn shared a heartfelt message about working with Asha Bhosle and the impact that she had on him. He and the band were the last project she’d worked on before she passed away on April 12 at the age of 92.
“Asha Bhosle was someone I had admired from afar for many years, her voice was my gateway to the marvellous world of Bollywood. I met her twice in Mumbai and was entranced by her grace and poise at the age of 91. The memory of sitting cross-legged playing R. D. Burman’s harmonium while she sang will stay with me forever. I send my deepest condolences to her lovely family. Asha, you had the voice of an angel, we love you.”
Albarn had always been a huge fan of Indian music and R. D. Burman, but getting the opportunity to work with Bhosle wasn’t something he would have skipped out on either. It became an experience and a dream come true. The bandmate talked about what it was like to sing with her and remember her, embracing her love in the process. Much like the rest of the world, he too was hit very hard with the news and her memories, and their shared song have become even more important.
She and the Gorillaz worked on the song “The Shadowy Light,” which was part of the album Parvat, and Asha Bhosle spoke very fondly about the song when she first announced it, correlating it with her journey.
