Alan Jackson’s Farewell Concert to Be Filmed for NBC Special

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

HOT MULLIGAN – “ISLAND IN THE SUN” (ft. FREE THROW’S CORY CASTRO)

Emo/pop punks Hot Mulligan have shared the second taste of their anticipated new album The Sound A Body Makes When It’s Still. It’s called “Island in the Sun,” it’s not a Weezer cover, and it features Cory Casto of Free Throw.

AESOP ROCK – “ROADWORK RAPPIN’”

Aesop Rock already released a great new album this year, and now he released another new single, which is the latest in a string of kid-friendly songs that Aes has released. The video follows suit, and the song is also accompanied by kid-friendly merch: a coloring and activity book and lunchbox.

DANGER MOUSE & MORMOR – “WONDER”

According to a press release, Danger Mouse and MorMor’s new single was “created spontaneously from scratch during an impromptu studio session.” “My relationship with Danger Mouse started when he invited me to meet and play music,” MorMor says. “From time to time we’d hang out and listen to records or watch films; not necessarily making music – I think we were both seeing if we could find an intersection where it’d make sense to pursue an idea. ‘Wonder’ came from exactly that.”

—

DISCLOSURE & ANDERSON .PAAK – “NO CAP”

“Creating something with Andy has been a long time coming!,” Disclosure say of their new collaboration with Anderson .Paak. “We first met at our show at Forrest Hills in NYC back in 2015 and have been fans of his for even longer. The time finally felt right and the right song appeared. He’s one of the most talented musicians we have ever worked with and we can’t wait for you all to hear this one and perform it live together soon.”

—

WOLF ALICE – “WHITE HORSES”

Wolf Alice’s anticipated new album arrives later this month, and they’ve shared another track from it, “White Horses.” Drummer Joel Amey, who wrote the song and sings lead vocals on it, says, “I was inspired by what songs we had already that were becoming The Clearing; the sonic shapes we were creating, the big acoustics, the harmonies, but I wanted to underpin it with a driving krautrock beat.”

—

DIE SPITZ – “POP PUNK ANTHEM (SORRY FOR THE DELAY)”

Die Spitz’s new album Something to Consume is out next month, and they’ve given us another preview with “Pop Punk Anthem (Sorry for the Delay).” “‘Pop Punk Anthem’ is a story from the perspective of someone being drove to obsessive insanity through limerence towards a person that does not reciprocate the feelings,” Ava Schrobilgen says. “But mostly it’s just a fun song to pay homage to the great early 2000’s pop punk legends.”

—

CUT COPY – “STILL SEE LOVE”

“‘Still See Love’ was a tune that came together pretty quickly, written about a couple clinging to what’s left of a relationship as it slowly capsizes,” says Cut Copy’s Dan Whittford of the band’s latest single. “My idea was to make a song that had a verse and chorus that came from different worlds. We tried to make the verses as loose and organic as possible, layering live bass, percussion and spaced out roomy drum sounds, inspired by hybrid disco-dub productions of artists like Arthur Russell, Francois K, and ESG. Then in the chorus the whole track empties out, going from a big cavernous space into a tiny one, driven along by a minimal stuttering synth rhythm. I love the sense of contrast we achieved in this song. It’s constantly flipping back and forth between worlds and it almost feels like it exists in two places at once.” New album Moments is out September 5.

JOHN CARPENTER – “HUNTING A KILLER” & “TAKE THE MASK”

Filmmaker, horror great and musician John Carpenter has announced a new box set that collects his scores to the recent Halloween trilogy of movies — 2018’s Halloween, 2021’s Halloween Kills, and 2022’s Halloween Ends — that comes with a load of unused music as bonus tracks. Halloween: The Complete Expanded Collection is out October 3 via Sacred Bones and you can hear two of the bonus tracks now.

—

MARGO PRICE – “LOSING STREAK”

“‘Losing Streak’ tells the story of my early years coming up in Nashville,” Margo Price says of the new single from her upcoming album Hard Headed Woman. It is a coming-of-age story inspired by struggle, substances and the search for the perfect song. It was co-written with my husband and songwriting partner, Jeremy Ivey.”

—

HUNX AND HIS PUNX – “WILD BOYS”

Hunx and His Punx will release their first new album in 12 years later this month and here’s another sleazy slice of it.

—

AVA LUNA – “FRAME OF US”

First single “Frame of Us” features legendary percussionist Larry McDonald (Gil Scott-Heron, King Tubby, Peter Tosh) and Julian Fader says of the song’s influences: “I got really into Soul Coughing and then I got Carlos into Soul Coughing and we made some fun samples to scatter over the record in that haphazard-with-intention 90s kind of way.”

—

—

MAJOR STARS – “BLACKOUT”

—

John Kongos, the ’70s British musician whose song “He’s Going to Step on You Again” was covered by Happy Mondays as “Step On,” has unearthed this 1986 recording and put the finishing touches on it 39 years later.

—

A$AP Rocky stars alongside Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s new joint, Highest 2 Lowest and he’s on the soundtrack too. So is Aiyana-Lee who sings the title theme. “‘Highest to Lowest’ is a soulful, triumphant journey,” she says. “One rooted in vulnerability and hope. It’s a song and story close to my heart that proves even in the darkest moments, light always finds its way through.”

—

GRUMPY – “BIRD PARTS” FT. “HARMONY”

Grumpy’s new EP Piebald is out next month on Bayonet Records, and the latest single is “Bird Parts,” which features Harmony Tividad (formerly of Girlpool). “In the timeline of the Piebald story, Bird Parts was the second-to-last song written,”Heaven Schmitt says. “After the complicated excitement of Crush, the denial of Deeptalker, the last-ditch hope of Proud of You, and the devastation of Knot, Bird Parts is my unraveling. I was living in Chicago, realizing I was accepting crumbs and I didn’t know why. My husband and I were hanging by a thread, and the girl I loved didn’t want me, she wanted my husband. I wrote Bird Parts about that painful proximity to the thing I wanted: ‘my girl isn’t mine, I’m a bottom feeder / I can’t kiss her but she calls me when I really need her.’ I was settling for being near her love, but not the recipient of it. I thought maybe we could make it work. Maybe we could stay an unconventional family. But it didn’t last. I didn’t want to be the unwanted sister-wife in this collapsing matrix. I started to unravel, to question what I was even doing there. That chaos is reflected in the song itself. It’s the only track on the EP that sings in a more vague, dream-like voice.”

—

OUSTED (PULLING TEETH, RUINER) – “SELF HATE FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE SELF HATE”

Ousted is a new-ish Baltimore hardcore band featuring some familiar faces from the scene–members have played in Pulling Teeth, Ruiner, Neolithic, and Dosser.
