Daniel Day-Lewis and Brian Cox are two of the finest actors of this generation, and young actors learn a lot about the art of performing from these two phenomenal masters of their craft. Recently, there have been a lot of debates about method acting and actors who take that immersive approach at some point during their career. One of the most interesting takes came from Cox, who labeled method acting as “crap” and criticized his co-star, Jeremy Strong, for constantly being in character.
But that’s not all. In 2023, Cox even brought Day-Lewis into the debate by saying that Strong picked up his method-acting habits from the Phantom Thread star. The Academy Award-winning star never responded to these claims because he retired from acting. But now that he has made a stellar comeback with the movie Anemone, Day-Lewis has finally addressed the claims, noting that he has been carelessly pulled into this debate because of the Succession star.
Speaking in an interview with the UK’s publication, Big Issue, the 68-year-old actor said, “Listen, I worked with Brian Cox once and got somehow drawn into this handbags-at-dawn conflict inadvertently. Brian is a very fine actor who’s done extraordinary work. As a result, he’s been given a soapbox… which he shows no sign of climbing down from. Any time he wants to talk about it, I’m easy to find.”
Furthermore, he vehemently denied all the allegations that Jeremy Strong had picked up method acting from him, clarifying that he’d be “appalled” if he had interfered with someone’s working process. Day-Lewis said, “If I thought during our work together I’d interfered with his working process, I’d be appalled. But I don’t think it was like that. So I don’t know where the fuck that came from. Jeremy Strong is a very fine actor, I don’t know how he goes about things, but I don’t feel responsible in any way for that. I just don’t like it being misrepresented to the extent it has been.”
Day-Lewis’s comments make it clear that he is ready for a debate and doesn’t like to be dragged into an unnecessary controversy. His acting credits and accolades are a testament to his brilliance. The debate around method acting is not new and has divided actors for years, with some praising its intensity and others calling it unnecessary.
The comments made by Cox reignited the discussion, especially when he mentioned Day-Lewis and Strong in the same breath. This debate is never-ending, but Day-Lewis has nothing to prove because his body of work and the respect he commands in the world of cinema speak louder than any controversy.
