David Harbour appears to have love on the brain, at least hopefully, following his separation from Lily Allen.
While discussing his next chapter with Esquire UK, Harbour, 50, predicted that his next 50 years “will be full of more stories that are complex and rich.”
“That’s really going to be the focus for me,” he told the outlet in a Saturday, November 1, profile. “Then, of course, there’s personal stuff that I want to do, and people that I want to love, and be good to and nurture, things like that.”
Harbour has been single since late last year when he and Allen, 40, quietly separated after four years of marriage. Now, the Stranger Things star is contemplating what — if anything — he would do differently in life.
“That’s such a hard question — the question of regret, or something. I would change either everything or nothing,” Harbour said “You either accept your path completely and realize that even the pain and the slip-ups and the mistakes are all part of the journey, and that there’s truth and growth, wisdom and deeper empathy and connection in all that. It’s kind of like a house of cards, the minute you try to change one thing you kind of have to change it all.”
He continued, “[As an artist] it’s about incorporating your life into something that you can give to other people so that they can have a cathartic response to their lives. If you’ve never been through anything, what do you really have to offer? If I were to change anything I’d change everything, and just make my life happy and silly and like, whatever, and then I wouldn’t be an artist anymore. And that would suck.”
While the actor has declined to discuss the downfall of his relationship publicly, 40-year-old Allen seemingly laid it all out in her new album, West End Girl.
“Intimacy is inherently messy. There are usually agreed-upon boundaries in relationships, but whether those boundaries are adhered to or not is becoming a grey area all of a sudden,” Allen told The Times of London last month, detailing her musical inspiration. “Dating apps make people disposable and that leads to the idea that if you are not happy, there’s so much more to choose from right in your pocket.”
She added, “I just feel we are living in really interesting times — in terms of how we define intimacy and monogamy, people being disposable or not. The way we are being intimate with each other is changing as humans. Lots of young women are not finding the idea of marriage or even a long-term relationship that attractive any more.”
Several of Allen’s new songs appear to accuse Harbour of infidelity, claims that he has not publicly addressed. Us Weekly has reached out for comment.
Instead, Harbour is simply focused on his next act.
“It’s like I’m chasing a dragon of that perfect story. It’s, like, a real hit for me.,” Harbour told Esquire. “I’m finding [that] in producing it and carving out my own story. I want to tell beautiful, amazing stories that make people feel things that they’ve never felt. Part of that is making them feel comforted, really seen and heard and also to make them question the things that they don’t question. To make them slightly confused about things that are deeper and under the surface.”
