What’s next for David Harbour following the end of “Stranger Things?” While the 50-year-old actor was set to appear in the upcoming drama film “Behemoth!” from director Tony Gilroy, he exited the production this week.
On Tuesday, a representative from Searchlight Pictures, the company producing the film, confirmed to Variety that Harbour had stepped back from his role.
Insiders further told the outlet that Harbour had been overwhelmed by the highly-publicized end to “Stranger Things.” The fifth and final season was released in three parts on Netflix between late November and December.
It’s unclear how far along production was for “Behemoth!,” but according to People, Harbour was seen filming for the title in December alongside co-star Olivia Wilde in Los Angeles.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Will Arnett would replace Harbour in the forthcoming film. Pedro Pascal, Eva Victor, Matthew Lillard, and others will also star alongside Arnett and Wilde.
Harbour’s sudden departure follows a slew of bad press in recent months.
In February, infidelity allegations pointed at Harbour arose after he and singer Lily Allen confirmed they were separating after four years of marriage.
In late October, Allen released her fifth studio album, “West End Girl” which included scathing lyrics believed to be about Harbour. These lyrics detailed the end of their marriage while also supporting the infidelity allegations.
Additionally, Harbour’s name was further dragged through the mud after a viral report began circulating in November claiming his “Stranger Things” co-star Millie Bobby Brown, 21, filed a bullying/harassment complaint against him before Season 5 filming.
While Brown never confirmed or denied the report and whether or not he had bullied her, she posed for a photo with him at the Season 5 premiere days after the news broke. She also told The Hollywood Reporter at the time it was “so nice” and “really exciting” being able to “come back together” with Harbour.
In December, Harbour notably didn’t attend a “Stranger Things” Season 5 event that he had previously confirmed to attend. The event featured nearly the entire cast. A spokesperson for the Paley Museum, where the event was held, told People at the time that Harbour could not attend “due to a scheduling conflict.” His absence raised questions from fans.
Harbour has previously opened up about struggling with mental illness. During an appearance on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast in 2018, Harbour revealed he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 25 after being committed to an asylum.
However, Harbour revealed his mental illness was linked to his preoccupation with spirituality, and he started taking medication following his diagnosis.
