It’s 10 days into what has already been a busy crab season for the crews on Deadliest Catch. Typhoon Halong wreaked havoc early on with dangerous conditions on the waters. The captains must brave the elements in hopes of making their respective quotas.

During the May 22 episode Rick Shelford was definitely feeling Mother Nature’s furry. Just as Johnathan Hillstrand readied for an offload, a disagreement aboard gets even more heated. Meanwhile Keith Colburn hopes to add to his team while Sig Hansen and Jake Anderson come together for the greater good.

Find out how it all shook out on the latest episode of the Discovery Channel series below.

Rick Shelford

The waves were crashing against the Aleutian Lady as Rick looked at 40 pots on his $2.1 million pureblood red king crab hunt. There was a dicey moment where the captain told everyone to take cover as water poured over the top of the vessel. This was a reminder of how dangerous these conditions could get.“If we had someone on the back deck, I would have killed somebody.” Rick concluded. There were 10 pots to get through and set with plans to change course. The vessels were on the  brink of overheating to get to his pots. The risk was worth the reward in a sense as the crew pulled in upwards of 63 crabs in a pot. Things go well until a fire broke out from the exhaust stack. Rick feverishly extinguished the flames. They manage to get things under control and head off to offload a huge amount of king crab with plans to prepare for more.

The Time Bandit endured a massive storm. After three days of nonstop work the exhausted crew were ready to offload $2 million Northern king crab and then begin the golden king crab season in two days. The crew Russell Newberry and Freddy Maugatai got into a screaming match. Jonathan wanted to nip this in the bud and called everyone in the wheelhouse. “We can’t have anybody yelling at anybody,” he said. Freddy couldn’t take it and left the boat with plans to go home to his family. This was a big hit for Johnathan’s team.

Sig Hansen & Jake Anderson

Sig Hansen

Sig’s Northwestern teams up with Jake, who captained the Cornelia Marie on the Northern grounds. The two make moves to set 40 pots into a narrow ravine that they think has good red king crab. There was a scary moment when Sig and Jake’s vessel got too close for comfort.

Sig wasn’t happy for the near collision thinking Jake wasn’t paying attention. Pots came up empty for each of them. Jake looked at the vessel’s past logs over the years. This got him reminiscing about another one of his mentors in the late Phil Harris, who oversaw the boat Jake was on in the past. Phil died in 2010 suffering a massive stroke. Jake ran into issues to the point Sig had to pull him out of getting cough in the lines.  Fortunes turn around as Jake and Sig’s crews hit a jackpot of crabs with upwards of 70 in a pot. “Thank you Phil,” Jake declared after the successful day. The team lights fireworks in his honor him.

Keith Colburn

When we caught up with Keith, he was delivering $1.2 million in Northern red king. Johnathan gave Keith a call to tell him about Freddy. The deckhand was in demand as Keith wanted to have him join The Wizard. “When you get Freddy on board, you don’t just have one deckhand. You have three deckhands.”

With a lot of work to do, Keith was happy to get Freddy on his boat. He attempted to stop Freddy from flying home and to work for him. Keith called his wife to pass along a message he wanted to retain Freddy’s services. The search for Freddy continued. Keith headed to the airport and ran into the worker who was preparing to fly out. Freddy eventually agreed to work for Keith.
