Deezer has updated its public statistic for GenAI music uploads to its platform. The streaming service says that it is now getting more than 30,000 “fully AI-generated tracks” every day – 28% of all its uploads. This is a rapid rise: it was 10% in January and then 18% in April. These figures are based on Deezer’s own AI-detection tool.
CEO Alexis Lanternier re-emphasised the company’s policies in dealing with this content. “We remove fully AI-generated content from algorithmic recommendations and we don’t include it in editorial playlists,” he said.
There’s one important thing to remember though: there may be a flood of fully AI-generated music being uploaded to Deezer (and by implication, its larger rivals too), but that doesn’t mean many people are listening to it. Indeed, in its announcement this morning Deezer reiterated that GenAI songs only account for 0.5% of its total streams – up to 70% of which are ‘fraudulent’ – essentially bots.
So, while this music is now 28% of uploads, actual humans listening to it only account for 0.15% of Deezer’s overall streams. That’s partly a reflection of the company’s decision to shut it out of recommendations and playlists, of course.
