Now just weeks out from taking the Eurovision stage, Australia’s Delta Goodrem joins this week’s episode of the Rolling Stone Uncut podcast!

Before the Sydney-born songwriter heads to Vienna to represent her country at the 70th Eurovision Song Contest starting May 12th, she sat down with Editor-in-Chief Neil Griffiths to talk all about how she got involved and why she’s doing it now.

In this episode, Goodrem also discusses becoming an independent artist after leaving Sony Music Australia a few years back following a 20-plus-year partnership, and when fans can expect a brand new album on the way.

Watch or listen to the full episode below.

Why she’s doing Eurovision now

“I would call it perfect timing. I had sort of been circled with Eurovision for a few years, where people would sort of come and say, ‘Would you do it?’ I was either on a show, a tour or a project, and I was in London last year, and we had a couple of headline shows at Hackney and Eurovision was on. I was backstage at my show, and this gentleman from the Sun paper had asked, ‘Would you ever do Eurovision? I’m like, ‘I’m always open-hearted, ‘I’m always open… if timing aligns then let’s talk about it. Then there was this sort of double page article that had said I was going to Eurovision!

“When I got back to Australia [last] November, and the lovely team came into my office and talked about it, I said I’m actually going into a lockdown of making my new album… I said yes, and I said ‘I’m gonna go into the studio and I’ll make sure we have the song that I feel represents me in this moment.’”

Leaving Sony and going independent

“I think for me it was always more about making sure that I’m surrounded with the right moment and the right people. I loved major labels… I’m a real ride or die kind of person, so when I love people and when they’re good, and they’re talented… I’m there.

“I just recognised that the world had changed after COVID, and I understood that it was a different landscape, and I felt like I wanted to be able to move quick with that landscape, and that was my change of season. But it doesn’t mean that I won’t continue to evolve and be true to the moment next and wherever that leads…

“I feel like I’m just getting started. You just have to keep evolving and moving with it, you know? You can’t hold on to anything that it used to be or was because that’s not here anymore. I welcomed the second COVID happened, I understood, ‘Alright, so we have to get efficient, everything’s gonna be cut back, we need to be able to learn how to be on our devices and I just adapt.”

Working on first album as an independent artist

“I feel like it’s just about the work. I’m really proud of our evolution in our house, so to speak, when it comes to the amount of wonderful projects and ancillaries to my world there is right now… I’ve always been somebody who’s steered their own ship. I don’t think anybody would notice from the outside or the inside because I’ve always been the captain of my own ship.

“I’m just wanting to like make a record that I love and I want to take on the road and perform for people.”
