In a surprise move, Showtime has canceled Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel series to the legendary TV show, despite a renewal for the series being reported earlier this year.

What happened to Dexter: Original Sin?

According to a report from Variety, Paramount has opted to not move forward with a second season of the series. Although the series was reported to have been renewed in April, Variety notes that the series has actually been “on hiatus,” and had no concrete plans to film a second season.

While no official reason for the cancellation was given, Variety’s report mentions that an individual with knowledge of the situation said that President of Skydance Television Matt Thunell has decided to put the focus more on Dexter: Resurrection and Michael C. Hall’s character following the Skydance-Paramount merger.

As a result, the series will conclude with just one season, which debuted in December 2024 and aired its finale in February. On a more positive note, Variety’s report mentions that Paramount is close to opening the writer’s room for a potential Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection, the follow-up to Dexter and Dexter: New Blood.

Original Sin starred Patrick Gibson as a young Dexter Morgan, and was told through the lens of an older Morgan thinking back on his earlier days.

“Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (Gibson) in 1991 Miami, as a student transitioning into a serial killer in training,” Deadline’s description reads. “When his bloodthirsty urges can no longer be ignored, Dexter finds solace and understanding in Harry. As his only confidant, he teaches Dexter a Code that’s designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to die—all while avoiding getting caught by law enforcement. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”
